About

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder characterized by less haemoglobin and fewer red blood cells in your body than normal. Haemoglobin is essential for oxygen transport in the body.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Chronic fatigue and weakness
  • Pale or yellowish skin, indicative of anaemia
  • Facial bone deformities and slow growth in children

Treatment

Regular blood transfusions and iron chelation therapy to remove excess iron from the body are common treatments. In some cases, a bone marrow transplant may be considered.

Prevention

Genetic counselling is advised for individuals with a family history of Thalassemia, especially for those planning to start a family.
