Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle Cell Disease can have a significant impact on quality of life. Have you or someone you know experienced its symptoms, like pain crises or swelling in hands and feet?

About

Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited condition where red blood cells become rigid and sickleshaped, disrupting blood flow and oxygen delivery throughout the body

Signs and Symptoms

  • Episodes of pain, known as sickle cell crises, due to blood flow obstruction
  • Swelling in hands and feet
  • Frequent bacterial infections and delayed growth
  • Vision problems from retinal damage

Treatment

Management includes pain relief medications, blood transfusions, and hydroxyurea to reduce the frequency of pain crises. Bone marrow transplant may be an option in some cases.

Prevention

As a genetic disorder, sickle cell disease cannot be prevented after birth, but genetic counselling can help at-risk couples understand the risks of having a child with the disease.
